Ulama must continue to lead PAS, says spiritual leader

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said even though Abdul Hadi Awang is in less than optimal health, the 77-year-old is still very much needed by the party's leaders and grassroots. PETALING JAYA : PAS's ulama faction must continue to lead the party as they can ensure its direction remains aligned with its core Islamic principles, says PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin. Despite recognising the valuable contributions by technocrats and professionals, Hashim said that ulamas, or religious scholars, should remain at the helm of the party's leadership. 'We are not denying the role of professionals, in fact, they are still important within the party structure,' he told Mingguan Malaysia. 'But to ensure the party's direction does not deviate, PAS must be led by an ulama.' Hashim said even though PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is in less than optimal health, the 77-year-old is still very much needed by the party's leaders and grassroots. Hadi has led PAS since June 2002 and is serving his seventh term as MP for Marang. His health has declined in recent years, and he has been admitted to hospital several times. While party leaders insist that Hadi remains central to PAS's identity and strength, questions about succession have repeatedly been raised in recent years because of his declining health. On Friday, Hadi said he wanted 'to die while still in office' when asked to comment on rumours that he wished to step down from his post because of health issues. In February, a PAS source told FMT the party was likely to hold a contest for its top two posts at its elections in September for the first time in a decade. Hashim said Hadi's determination to continue steering the party demonstrates his resilience and standing as a respected and principled leader. 'He can still give views based on shariah. That is the kind of leader we need in PAS,' he said.

Contest for PAS presidency remains open despite hint by Hadi, says veep

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said today he 'wants to die while still in office', a hint that he may defend his post in September. PETALING JAYA : The contest for the PAS presidency remains open despite Abdul Hadi Awang hinting earlier today of ambitions to remain in the top post at the party election in September. PAS vice-president Amar Abdullah said anyone could contest in the party polls as long as they fulfilled the requirements. 'But if Hadi wants to defend the post, we welcome it,' he told FMT. Amar said Hadi was still needed by PAS, primarily due to his experience and know-how. This morning, Hadi said he wanted 'to die while still in office' when asked to comment on rumours that he wished to step down from the post he had held since 2003 because of health issues. Last month, Sinar Harian reported that the seven-term Marang MP had hinted at stepping down due to health reasons. In February, a PAS source told FMT the party was likely to hold a contest for its top two posts at its elections this year, for the first time in a decade. Hadi and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man have not been challenged for the posts since the 2015 party elections. Separately, Terengganu PAS assistant secretary Hanafiah Mat said he appreciated the fact that Hadi welcomed the views of members who want him to stay on as president. 'It's not just the Muslims (who want Hadi to remain) but the non-Muslims as well who benefit from his influence,' he said.

Hadi says would like to die ‘while still in office'

Marang MP Abdul Hadi Awang has been president of PAS since 2003. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has hinted at ambitions to retain the top post at the party polls this September. Hadi, who has been plagued by health issues, said he felt better following a procedure at the National Heart Institute, Utusan Malaysia reported. 'If possible, I want to die while still in office,' he was quoted as saying. Hadi was asked to comment on rumours that he wished to step down from the post he had held since 2003 due to health issues. His health had been on the decline for the past few years, necessitating dialysis and several hospital admissions. Last month, Sinar Harian reported that the seven-term Marang MP had hinted at stepping down as PAS president due to health reasons. It is understood that Hadi expressed his intention to senior party leaders at a recent retreat in Terengganu. This fuelled speculation on the party's top two positions ahead of its internal elections. PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik claimed there were calls for Hadi to relinquish the top post, although this was denied by several state-level leaders. In February, a PAS source told FMT that the party was likely to hold a contest for its top two posts at its elections this year, for the first time in a decade. Hadi and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man have not been challenged for the posts since the 2015 party polls.
